31. Fehu Rune

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Fehu

Fehu means "livestock", "cattle", and "wealth" in Proto-Germanic, which were almost synonyms back in time. In Old Norse and modern Nordic languages, it keeps the same meaning, but the form shifted to fé / fæ. In modern English, a direct descendant is the word "fee". Not that modern, but remarkable word "feudal" also descends from "fehu".

Symbolically, this rune is usually associated with prosperity, fertility, and growth.
And the same we can say about Vanir god Freyr, brother of Freya, who sometimes has a double Yngvi-Freyr name, which points us back to the Ingwaz rune.

From the Runic Alchemy perspective, Fehu is a second "world" rune after Ansuz, and its shape somehow mirrors the geometry of Ansuz:

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Fehu

It begins from the vertical synchronicity of Fire, Earth, Emptiness, and Air, followed by the double ascendance of Light:

  • from the level of Earth to the horizon of Emptiness
  • and at the same time from the horizon to the Air of sky

Interesting how perfectly the Fehu connects with double descending Ansuz, which starts from the same vertical but shifted up and meets the Fehu again on both levels of Air and Emptiness:

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Fehu + Ansuz

Together they give us a combination of Wunjo rune + killed Thurisaz, whose body Odin brings to the central Emptiness to build the middle world Midgard:

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Wunjo + Thurisaz

In the modern spiritual community, this rune is often interpreted directly as "money", which, in my opinion, is not fully correct. The "livestock" aspect tells us about the connection with the world, while the abstract "money" does the opposite.

Real wealth comes from the Earth, from nature. It grows and multiplies if handled with love. And "money" strips the idea of wealth from reality and turns it into numbers and paper. If the growth of money becomes a purpose itself, we see what people do with nature for that, forgetting that paper and numbers you can't eat.

To do the Fehu rune, I recommend making a gesture like on illustration in the beginning of the chapter:

  • Hold vertical left hand slightly above and bend fingers so the point to the upper-right direction - they will represent the upper bar which ascends from Emptuness to Air.

  • Place the inner side of the right wrist at the level of the left wrist or slightly below, and also point the right palm in the top-right direction, parallel to the fingers of the left palm - this is the second, lower ascending bar of Fehu, from Earth to Emptiness.

Now you have both palms showing the direction of Growth from below to above, so it's a good time to connect with the lower world of Fire Muspelheim and feel how Light is coming from the Fire, breaking from behind the material reality of Earth and shining to the sky. Let the Light fill your chest and heart and overflow abundantly.

The world around you is bubbling, constantly being created, and you see? The Light is coming through from all directions. You have nothing to worry about.
