15. Naudiz Rune
Hagalaz rune describes a wild action of conceivement of the order in the depths of the Earth. Once it's finished and the disturbing energy of the Fire is discharged from the Air in the form of lightning, the Air slowly calms down. We see that in its initial raw form, it was a mixture of the Water essence and a heavier smoky part that originates from the interaction of Water and hot Earth.
However, as the Air becomes calmer, the lighter component, the pure Water essence of transparency, moves upward, as we will see in Algiz.
And the heavier, earthy component of the Air moves down and slips deeper into the Earth between rocks to reach and feed the growing crystal.
It's Naudiz rune:
It looks like the "Isa" rune of Ice crossed by a diagonal bar descending from Air to Earth level through the middle point of Emptiness.
It's similar to the Hagalaz rune, but instead of states before and after, the vertical axis of Simultaneity emphasizes the center point of transcendence through the horizon border between Air and Earth.
"Naudiz" means need, necessity, distress, urge.
Need is when something is missing.
When food is missing, the need is hunger. When money is missing, the need is poverty. But what if we don't know what is missing? How to recall the thing that you forgot? In that case, we can see the need as a call. Even if we don't yet know what's missing, we can use this call itself as a guiding thread.
In the Norse tradition, there are goddesses Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld. They are described as spinning / weaving threads of destiny.
We can track the etymology of their names back to Proto-Germanic:
- Urðr -> Wurdiz - Fate\destiny.
- Verðandi -> Werþaną - To turn into, to become (from Proto-Indo-European "wert" - to turn, rotate).
- Skuld -> Skuldiz - Debt, obligation.
So we can interpret the sequence of Norn names as a phrase. "Werþaną" is a verb in an infinitive form. We need "wirþidi" as a 3d singular form of werþaną, like in English "to turn into" -> "turns into".
Wurdiz wirþidi skuldiz

"Destiny turns into duty"
Within the metaphor of thread spinning:
- The tow of unspun fiber on the distaff is a cloud of potential destiny in the sky.
- Picking the pinch of fiber with the left hand is seeking and choosing your destiny.
- The thread in the hands being spun is facing and implementing your destiny. It's an effort, not just passive acceptance.
- The cop of spun thread collected on the spindle is what you have already done so far. It's spinning with inertia, so the consequences of your deeds in the past directly influence the present moment when destiny comes to be.
Another goddess connected to spinning is Frigg. There are 12th-century depictions of two naked women in cloacks riding distaff and cat in Schleswig Cathedral. Supposedly, they are Frigg and Freyja, respectively.
In German folklore, Frau Holle (Holda, Perchta, Berchta, Berta, Bertha, Spillaholle) is connected with spinning, overseeing various related taboos. At the same time, she is called "Old Mother Frost" and is causing snowfall by fluffing up her bed until feathers fly out. She was also riding with witches on distaffs, similar to Frigg.
Let's practice the Naudiz rune. We will use a gesture of one of the most ancient, manual "spindle drop" spinning technique:
- With three fingers of your left hand, you pinch the fibers from the clouds on the Air level of your chest / left shoulder. You may start feeling the thread of Air energy coming inside and through your left palm.
- Place three pinched fingers of the right hand at a lower position, approximately at the level of your liver, as if you hold the other end of the thread at the tip of the spindle hanging down.
- The thread connecting your left and right pinches resembles the descending diagonal of the Naudiz rune, while your spine is its trunk. If you were practicing hands activation and channel cleansing, you may feel this thread through vibration in your palm centers and along the inner side of your hands.
This rune is very practical when you need to constrain yourself, remain sober, fight an addiction, or hold impulsive reactions.
It's also very powerful for witchcraft. I recommend to learn the actual manual thread spinning to fully unlock its potential. Spinning material thread from the fiber (I suggest linen) mixed with various ingredients, like human hairs, animal fur, or other symbolic substances, gives a lot of creative options to satisfy various needs and help things happen in life. Norns' names in their Proto-Germanic meaning (and optionally pronunciation) can be used as an incantation.
As part of your Creation, use this rune to nurture the embryo of your crystal until it grows big enough so its bottom will touch the Fire and its tip breaks through the surface of the horizon so it will start conducting what was missing - the spirit of the Fire, the Light.
Crystals grow slowly. This ascetic process of nurturing your crystal takes time and perseverance.
It's probably a small seed of crystal at the beginning, and it keeps growing and refining as much as you keep growing and refining it. But even with a small seed, you are already starting to break through the darkness…
