26. Uruz Rune

I asked for strength, and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom, and God gave me problems to learn to solve.
I asked for prosperity, and God gave me a brain and brawn to work.
I asked for courage, and God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for love, and God gave me people to help.
I asked for favors, and God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted.
I received everything I needed.
-- commonly attributed to Hazrat Inayat Khan.

The Uruz rune name means aurochs, an ancient wild bovine, extinct nowadays. This is older Proto-Germanic and Anglo-Saxon meaning. There is a second, Old Norse alternative meaning, referencing weather - sleet or drizzle.

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Uruz

And if seen from a symbolic and philosophical perspective, these two alternative meanings are complementary.

Aurochs is associated with raw wild power. While dangerous, wild bulls are not predators, they won't attack if they see no threat, they only protect their peace.

Sleet or drizzle is a challenging and uncomfortable state of the environment, something you can and have to endure. If you have no option but to keep walking, it makes no sense to fight with it. If you are angry, if you are disgusted, if you are complaining, if you feel bad, or if you indulge yourself, you are only wasting your energy. If you must keep walking in the cold rain, the best way is to walk calmly and find your power and comfort in inner peace and silence.

From the Runic Alchemy perspective, Uruz is a descent from the Water to the Air.

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Uruz

First vertical bar and descending one are the same as in Tiwaz rune:

Runic Philosopher's Stone - Tiwaz Uruz

While the first, ascending bar of Tiwaz is a request from Air to Water, the second descending one is a response. We've already seen this response in the Laguz rune, but here there is a second vertical bar going after, to reflect this answer not only in Air, but also Emptiness and Earth, hence across all the middle world.

The Uruz rune is perfect if you need to find strength and inner peace to endure and overcome a challenge you are facing.

Let's do it:

Runic Alchemy - Uruz

  • Keep your left hand and palm straight up - it's a first vertical of Uruz.
  • Straighten your spine and sync yourself across Earth, Emptiness, Air, and Water
  • Focus above your head, on the upper world of Water, where the Guiding star is shining quietly, and let cold Water flow down to your head, shoulders, and chest. You may help yourself with a calm exhalation. This is a descending diagonal of Uruz.
  • Sync yourself across Earth, Emptiness, and Air again to accept and integrate it into your system.

Continue until it feels smooth and autonomous - then switch from a three separate, sequential steps to simultaneous perception of these three flows as parts of a single holistic state of Uruz, a state of power and inner peace.
